The New IBMi

IBM i has developed a tried-and-true reputation to help companies avoid downtime and keep their businesses secure. The object-based architecture gives companies the confidence that viruses disguised as files cannot be introduced into the system. Database row and column access control security make it simple to secure valuable business information for groups of users with different business roles and requirements. This is critical as companies extend their mobile user access and meet new regulatory requirements for privacy.

Multiple business applications can be run on the same server in the IBMi operating environment, simplifying management and in turn decreasing operational costs. Many IBM i clients have experienced a new low total cost of ownership due to this simplification of operations.

IBMi is constantly evolving, working with independent software vendors to keep more than 2,200 applications updated to industry standards. IBM i on Power Systems provides a highly scale-able and robust architecture ideal for efficiently deploying and developing these modern independent software vendors business applications.

IBM i 7.3 Announcement

In April of 2016, IBM announced the IBM i 7.3 release, which will be generally available on April 15, 2016.

As an IBM approved Premier Business Partner, we work with companies like yours to support all your IBM needs, including that of the new IBM i 7.3.

Steve Will, Chief Architect at IBM said:

“These days, everyone wants to get more information from the data which is running their businesses. They want “insight” on how that data affects business. On an IBM i system, of course, DB2 is where that data is stored. DB2, like all databases with a long, successful history, is designed specifically to do transaction processing, because transaction processing is at the heart of running a business. However, over the years, as CIOs & CTOs came to take transactions for granted, they started asking their IT and application departments to get more value out of the data. For example, they started asking questions about what their business data looked like in the past.”

He followed this with:

IBM i 7.3 introduces a new technology, built into DB2, to handle this sort of business problem: DB2 Temporal Support. Once again, DB2 is providing a “data-centric” way to deal with a whole class of requirements. As of 7.3, DB2 tables can be identified as needing to have their history tracked, and DB2 will automatically store older versions of the data as it gets updated. This allows for very simple, natural queries to be written to ask questions such as “What was in this table six months ago?” or “What was the state of the table on June 1?” This is the kind of insight many business leaders want, and now DB2 can be set up to simply make this kind of insight a simple matter of running a query.”

If you would like to know more about the new IBM i 7.3, then please feel free to contact us.

Cloud based Disaster Recovery for IBM i

As one of the UK’s leading experts in the provision of Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions for IBM i series, Life IT likes to ensure that we remain at the forefront of technological developments and industry trends.

Looking ahead to the trends for 2016 with our DR partner Maxava, Allan Campbell (CEO at Maxava) says: “We see a large shift in DR strategy occurring in the SMB areas as IBM i customers look to upgrade from tape to save time and to avoid having to re-key lost data in a disaster scenario. The challenges of avoiding further CapEx investment plus the growing maturity of cloud services probably explains why we see a major increase in DRaaS, which we predict will easily eclipse traditional license sales for new DR customers this year.”

“Cloud is going mainstream for the IBM i with customers mixing and matching in-house and cloud based services as their needs dictate. ‘No-down-time-migrations’ are becoming the norm as customers use their real time replication solutions to run parallel production environments for upgrades.”

Developed using Maxava software, Life’s DraaS solutions for System i, offers secure, reliable & cost effective protection for critical business information on System i. For more information or to discuss your specific Cloud based DR requirements please contact us on 01625 548111.

We are a well-established organisation providing high quality support from a team of experts with offices in the North and the South. So what can Life IT provide?

It’s a service that draws on the wealth of experience and expertise that comes from undertaking such projects on a daily basis.

End of support for IBM i 6.1 and 6.1.1

V6R1 was launched in March 2008 and IBM announced that IBM i 6.1 and 6.1.1 normal support ended on the 30th September 2015. For those customers still on 6.1 or 6.1.1 then it’s time to upgrade to version 7 and take advantage of some of the significant new security features.

V7R1 became available in April 2010, and V7R2 has been out since April 2014. To upgrade to V7R1 or V7R2 from V6 does not require the lengthy program conversion that was a requirement when upgrading from V5R4.

If you decide to stay on 6.1 then support is still available with Service Extension which is an extra fee in addition to your IBM Software Maintenance support (SWMA). Even with Service Extension, there are no more PTFs for V6R1 and support is on a best effort basis.

Upgrade Offering

We can offer to test the upgrade process on one of our servers running V7R1 or V7R2, and make the server available to your users for application testing. Once testing is complete we fully document an implementation plan of what we’ll do & how long it will take.
