Great news, IBM have announced a new inexpensively priced Power System server which will be available from the 17th March 2017.
The new Power System S812 is specifically for dedicated smaller workloads and is priced at approximately 20% less than the current entry model making it a great replacement if you are currently using older Power (AS/400, iSeries) models or considering a server for HA/DR purposes.
This 1-socket P5 software group system can be ordered with one core for IBM i (up to 25 users) and up to four cores for AIX. The S812 provides the benefits of great performance per core and per socket, utilizing the POWER8 processor. It also provides resilient I/O capabilities, internal storage, and hot-plug PCI capabilities, along with greater reliability, availability, and serviceability.
For IBM i workloads the Power System S812 supports one core licensed for IBM i in a 19-inch rack-mount, 2U (EIA units) drawer configuration, maximum of 64GB DDR4 memory and eight 2.5″ SAS SFF-3 bays for HDD or SSD disks (all hot pluggable)
As an example, for a S812 server configured with:
– 64GB memory
– 8 x 283GB disks
– LTO5 or LTO6 tape drive (sits in a separate multi-media enclosure)
– 25 IBM i user licence
– 3-year software maintenance and 3-year hardware warranty
the price will be under £27,500 + vat.
With 2-year interest, free finance from IBM Global Finance this equates to 8 quarterly payments of £3,437.50 (subject to credit approval).
